This combination tool is designed to be used in intaglio printmaking processes. Both tools will reduce the ability of an area of a plate to hold ink. One end is a blunt burnishing tool, used for smoothing the face of the metal plate in order to soften engraved lines and remove burrs. The convex stem of the tool, just below the tip (rather than the tip itself) is used for this purpose, in a polishing motion. The other tool is a scraper, used to lower the plate surface and scrape away burrs.
